PAST EVENTS
The 2009 Founders' Day Celebration was held February 15, 2009. The 2009 celebration marked the centennial of the NAACP's founding on February 12, 1909. “We are one hundred.” This annual celebration is a very special occasion on which we commemorate those brave and courageous individuals who dedicated themselves to addressing the challenges faced by people of color. While celebrating the accomplishments of national and local founders, branch chapters rededicate themselves to continuing the work of the nation’s oldest and most influential civil rights organization. As we look to the future, we recommit ourselves to doing the work that is necessary and essential if justice and equality are to prevail. The guest speaker for this event was was King Salim Khalfani, Executive Director, Virginia State Conference NAACP.
The 2008 Freedom Fund Banquet was held September 26, 2008. This is an annual fund raising event held by every branch of the NAACP. The purpose is to raise funds to advance civil rights work and to ensure the political, economic and cultural well-being of people of all colors. As a non-profit organization, all officers and executive committee members at the local level of the NAACP work on a volunteer basis to address civil rights complaints and issues. This event paid homage to 2008 Freedom Fighter Honorees Dr. Paul Gaston, Rev. Dr. Reginald A. Johnson, and Rev. William S. Johnson. Silver Life NAACP member Alphonso H. Bowers, Jr., CEO of Bowers Family Enterprises, was the guest speaker.
